Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) 2028: Your Complete Guide to a Full-Free Scholarship to Study in Australia

0

Most people find out about the Australia Awards three weeks before the deadline. They scramble, they submit something rushed, and they never hear back.

You’re reading this in September 2026. The 2027 round closed in April, and the 2028 round won’t open until roughly February next year.

Which means you’ve stumbled into the single best position an applicant can be in: five months of runway, and nobody else using it.

Let’s use it properly.

At a Glance: Australia Awards Scholarship Key Benefits

  • Funder: The Australian Government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) — often searched as the “DFAT scholarship.”
  • Who it’s for: Citizens of eligible developing countries across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and the Caribbean.
  • Study levels: Full-time undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational study at participating Australian universities and TAFE institutions.
  • Full tuition fees — paid directly to your institution.
  • Return air travel — economy airfare to and from Australia.
  • Establishment allowance — a one-off payment toward accommodation, textbooks and study materials.
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) — a fortnightly stipend at a rate set by the department.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) — for the full duration of your program.
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP) plus ongoing language and academic support.

  • Key condition: You must return to your home country for at least two years after finishing.
  • Timeline: The 2027 intake opened 1 February 2026 and closed 30 April 2026 at 14:00 AEST. The 2028 intake is expected to follow the same annual pattern, opening around February 2027.
  • Where you apply: The OASIS portal at oasis.dfat.gov.au.

What the Australia Awards Scholarship Actually Is

Here’s the thing most guides get wrong. They describe the AAS as a scholarship. It isn’t, not really.

It’s a development program that happens to pay for a degree.

DFAT supports individuals from developing countries to gain qualifications, knowledge and leadership skills that contribute to the economic and social development of their home countries.

Read that sentence again, slowly. Every word of your application will be judged against it.

Scholars are selected for their potential to lead positive change at home after they return — not as a general academic prize. A student with a 3.9 GPA and no clear development story loses to a student with a 3.2 GPA and a concrete plan to fix something real.

I’ve watched that outcome happen dozens of times. It surprises people every single time.

Who Can Apply: Australia Awards Eligible Countries

The program runs across more than fifty developing countries. For the 2027 intake, the eligible list included Algeria, Angola, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Botswana, Cambodia, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Ghana, Guinea, the Gambia, Indonesia, Kiribati, Kenya, Laos, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, New Caledonia, Nigeria, Niue, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Rwanda, Samoa, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Vietnam, Wallis and Futuna, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Palau runs on a separate window — the 2027 Palau round opened 30 March and closed 30 June 2026.

The list shifts between cycles, so confirm yours on the DFAT participating countries page before you invest months of work.

Your Country Profile Is the Most Important Document You’ll Read

Every participating country publishes its own profile with specific eligibility rules, priority study areas and application dates.

This is where the real requirements live. Minimum GPA, minimum years of work experience, which sectors are funded this cycle — all of it varies country to country.

Download yours the day applications open. Then read it three times.

Australia Awards Eligibility Criteria Explained

The Non-Negotiables

You must be at least 18 years old on 1 February of the year your scholarship would commence. You must not be an Australian citizen, hold permanent residency, or be applying for a visa to live in Australia permanently.

You also must not be married to, engaged to, or in a de facto relationship with someone who holds — or is eligible for — Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency.

Serving military personnel are not eligible. Neither are applicants already studying in Australia.

You’ll need to satisfy DFAT’s standard health and character requirements, and meet all the academic and English entry requirements of the Australian institution you want to attend.

Work Experience Requirements

This one confuses people, so let me be precise.

Work experience is not universally mandatory — but many country programs require a minimum number of years of relevant post-qualification experience, and most successful applicants have several years behind them.

Professional experience is what makes your development story credible. Anyone can claim they’ll reform their country’s water management. Someone who has worked four years inside a water utility can explain exactly which regulation is broken and why.

If your country profile sets a minimum, treat it as an absolute rule. If it doesn’t, treat experience as your competitive edge anyway.

The IELTS and TOEFL Question

Here’s the nuance that most blogs flatten into a false promise.

At the application stage, an English test result is often not a mandatory field — some country programs explicitly tell applicants to select “None” if they don’t have one yet.

That is not a waiver of English requirements. It’s a deferral.

You still must meet the English entry requirements of your chosen course before you can be placed. If your program demands IELTS 7.0, you will need IELTS 7.0. Many country programs provide in-country English language training to successful candidates ahead of departure.

So apply without a score if your country allows it. Just don’t mistake that flexibility for an exemption.

The Two-Year Home Return Rule

Scholars must return to their home country for at least two years after completing their studies. This ensures the skills gained in Australia are applied to development outcomes back home.

This is a binding condition, not a suggestion. Breaching it creates a debt obligation and closes doors with DFAT permanently.

Be honest with yourself before you apply. If your real goal is permanent migration to Australia, this is the wrong scholarship — and selection panels have become very good at spotting that motivation between the lines.

What You Actually Receive: The Full Benefits Package

Full Tuition Fees

Paid in full, directly to your institution, for the minimum duration required to complete your program — including any necessary preparatory training.

Return Air Travel

Economy airfare from your home country to Australia at the start, and home again at the end.

Establishment Allowance

A one-off payment on arrival, covering the brutal first-month costs: rental bond, basic furniture, textbooks, study materials.

Anyone who has landed in a new country with two suitcases knows why this line item matters more than its size suggests.

Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE)

A fortnightly stipend toward basic living costs, paid at a rate determined by the department.

Budget carefully and realistically. Rent in Sydney and rent in Adelaide are different universes, and your CLE rate doesn’t change to match.

Overseas Student Health Cover

Full OSHC for the duration of your scholarship. No premiums out of pocket, no gap you have to plan around.

Academic and Language Support

You’ll complete an Introductory Academic Program before your course begins — designed to ease you into Australian academic culture, referencing conventions and assessment styles.

Supplementary academic support continues through your degree if you need it.

Fieldwork Allowance

Research students may receive a fieldwork allowance, which can fund data collection in your home country or a third location.

For a Master’s by Research or PhD candidate studying a problem at home, this benefit is worth far more than its dollar value.

How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — Confirm Your Country Profile (Now)

Find your country’s eligibility rules, priority sectors and dates on the official Australia Awards site.

Pay closest attention to priority development areas. Your proposed course must align with the priority areas designated for your country.

Apply to study something outside those sectors and your application fails on a technicality, no matter how brilliant your essays are.

Step 2 — Choose Your Two Course Preferences Strategically

You’ll nominate course preferences using correct CRICOS course codes.

You do not need an offer letter to apply — Australia Awards helps successful candidates enrol.

Choose courses that connect logically to three things at once: your academic background, your current employment, and your country’s stated development needs. A panel should be able to see the line running through all three without squinting.

Email the institutions with questions. Allow time for them to respond — universities are slow in December and January.

Step 3 — Build Your Document Pack Early

Typically you’ll need:

  • Passport or national identity document
  • Certified academic transcripts and certificates
  • Detailed CV with clear employment dates
  • Referee reports on the prescribed Australia Awards templates
  • English test results, where available
  • Any country-specific forms listed in your profile

Certification and translation take weeks in most countries. Start in November, not April.

Step 4 — Register on OASIS and Answer the Questions

Applications go through the Online Australia Scholarships Information System (OASIS).

Rather than one open personal statement, the AAS asks several separate questions — course choice, leadership experience, development impact — each with its own strict word or character limit, often 300 to 500 words.

There’s no room for a warm-up paragraph. Answer the question in your first sentence.

Step 5 — Submit Early

Only compliant and complete applications progress to assessment. An incomplete file is recorded as noncompliant and simply never gets read.

Submit by mid-April, not in the final hours. Portal traffic spikes hard near the close, and “the website crashed” has never once extended a deadline.

Step 6 — Interview and Written Task

Shortlisted candidates are contacted for an interview, and in many countries a written task as well.

Only shortlisted applicants hear anything. Silence is not a system error.

Step 7 — Placement, Pre-Departure, Arrival

Successful candidates get help with placement offers, health checks, visa liaison and pre-departure briefings before flying out for the Introductory Academic Program.

How to Write a Reintegration Plan That Wins

This is the section that decides your outcome. Read it twice.

Understand What the Plan Is For

The Reintegration Plan — called a Development Impact Plan or Development Impact and Linkages Plan in some countries — is a statement of intent describing practical, achievable activities you’ll implement with your new skills on return.

It must also identify anticipated challenges and include a mitigation strategy showing how you’ll handle them.

Panels use it to assess your potential to contribute to and lead development at home. You may even be asked to revise it during your scholarship.

Anchor It to a Real National Document

Program guidance is unusually direct about this: applicants are told to consult their country’s national development plan when preparing the reintegration plan.

So go find yours. Your national medium-term development plan, your sector strategy, your ministry’s current five-year framework.

Quote the specific priority your work addresses. Name the section. This one move separates serious applicants from hopeful ones within the first paragraph.

Use the Three-C Structure

Context. Name one specific problem, with evidence. Not “my country faces health challenges” — instead, “maternal mortality in my province sits at X per 100,000, more than double the national average, and we have four midwives for eleven rural clinics.”

Course. Explain why this particular Australian program, and not a local one, gives you the skill you’re missing. Name the unit, the research centre, the supervisor.

Contribution. Give three practical, achievable activities you’ll start within your first year home. Attach timelines. Attach the position you’ll hold and the organisation you’ll do it through.

Vague ambition reads as fantasy. Specific modesty reads as competence.

Name the Obstacles Honestly

The plan explicitly asks for challenges and mitigation.

Most applicants skip this or write something toothless. Don’t. Write that your ministry’s procurement cycle will delay implementation by six months, and that you’ll use that window to run the training component instead.

A panel that sees you anticipating friction believes you’ve actually thought about coming home.

Make Your Referees Reinforce It

Referee reports should highlight your skills and reference your study plans and reintegration strategy.

So brief your referees. Send them your draft plan. A referee report that independently echoes your development story is enormously persuasive — and a generic one wastes a slot you can’t get back.

A Warning You Genuinely Need to Hear

Australia Awards programs have issued explicit guidance on artificial intelligence: AI must not be used to create or modify application content, and doing so may be considered plagiarism or fraud, leading to disqualification.

Basic productivity help — spelling, grammar, organising your own ideas — is generally acceptable. Having a chatbot write or paraphrase your essays is not.

Awards are made on merit, integrity and demonstrated capability, and your application must be in your own voice.

There’s a practical reason beyond the rules, too. You’ll be interviewed about what you wrote. Defending someone else’s sentences under questioning is a genuinely miserable experience.

How You’re Actually Assessed

Selection weighs three things:

Academic competence — your records and qualifications.

Professional and personal leadership attributes — relevant work experience and demonstrated commitment to development.

Potential development impact — what your study will realistically change back home.

Use the STAR method for leadership questions: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Focus relentlessly on your personal role, not your team’s collective achievement.

Also worth knowing: women, people with disability and ethnic minority applicants are strongly encouraged to apply, and many country programs run targeted equity measures.

Common Mistakes That Sink Strong Candidates

Choosing a course outside your country’s priority sectors. The fastest route to rejection, and entirely avoidable.

Writing a generic development story. “I want to help my country develop” tells a panel nothing. One specific broken system tells them everything.

Ignoring the referee templates. Prescribed forms exist for a reason, and off-template reports weaken your file.

Treating the two-year return as fine print. It’s a core design feature of the program. Build your plan around it, not despite it.

Starting in March. Certification, translation, referee coordination and two drafts of a reintegration plan do not compress into six weeks.

Your Five-Month Preparation Plan

September–October 2026. Download your country profile from the last cycle. Identify your priority sector and shortlist courses. Read your national development plan and find the paragraph your career actually sits inside.

November 2026. Order transcripts and begin certification. Approach three potential referees — brief them properly.

December 2026. Book IELTS or TOEFL if your target course requires a score. Write the ugly first draft of your reintegration plan.

January 2027. Rewrite that draft twice. Give it to someone in your sector who will be blunt with you. Finalise course codes.

February 2027. Applications are expected to open. Register on OASIS immediately and start filling it in.

March–mid April 2027. Complete, proofread, upload everything, submit. Then breathe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an admission offer before applying?
No. Australia Awards assists successful candidates with enrolment and placement.

Can I bring my family?
Family accompaniment rules vary by country program and are not funded as part of the core package. Check your country profile.

How many scholarships are awarded?
Published estimates vary considerably by source and cycle. Rather than chasing a global number, look at your own country’s allocation — that’s the figure that affects your odds.

Can I stay in Australia after graduating?
Not immediately. The two-year home return requirement is mandatory and enforceable.

What if my country isn’t on the list?
Check the DFAT participating countries page for updates, then explore Australian university scholarship databases for alternatives.

One Last Thing

The applicants who win Australia Awards aren’t usually the most academically decorated in the pile. They’re the ones who can point at one specific broken thing in their country, explain exactly what skill they’re missing to fix it, and describe what Monday morning looks like when they get home.

That answer takes months to develop honestly. You have those months.

Start with your country’s development plan this week. Everything else builds from there.

Details in this guide reflect the 2027 Australia Awards cycle and published program guidance. Eligibility, benefits and dates change between intakes and vary by country — always verify against dfat.gov.au and your own country profile before applying.

GKS Scholarship 2027: The Complete Global Korea Scholarship Guide for Students (Full-Free Scholarship in South Korea)

0

If you have ever stared at a Korean university tuition page and quietly closed the tab, this article is for you. The Global Korea Scholarship is the reason thousands of students who couldn’t afford a plane ticket are now sitting in lecture halls in Seoul, Daejeon and Gwangju.

And here’s the part that should make you sit up straight: the 2027 undergraduate cycle is open right now, and the Embassy Track closes on September 30, 2026 at 18:00 KST.

Let’s get you ready.

Quick Summary: GKS Scholarship at a Glance

  • What it is: A fully funded Korean government scholarship, run by NIIED (National Institute for International Education) under the Ministry of Education. Formerly called KGSP.
  • Who it’s for: International students pursuing associate, bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degrees in South Korea.
  • What it covers: Tuition, one year of Korean language training, round-trip economy airfare, and a generous annual living allowance. No family contribution needed.
  • 2027 undergraduate seats: 286 places — 156 through the Embassy Track across 74 invited countries, and the remainder through the University Track.
  • 2027 undergraduate deadline: Embassy Track applications close September 30, 2026 at 18:00 Korea Standard Time. University Track deadlines vary by institution, falling between September and November 2026.
  • Graduate cycle (GKS-G): Applications typically open in February. The 2026 round invited 2,000 international students — expect the 2027 guidelines around the same time.
  • Language requirement: No TOPIK score needed to apply. The funded language year is mandatory unless you already hold TOPIK Level 5 or 6, or you’re a research-program scholar.
  • Two tracks, one choice: Applying through both simultaneously results in disqualification.

What Exactly Is the GKS Scholarship?

The Global Korea Scholarship is South Korea’s flagship government scholarship for international students. It’s funded through NIIED, an arm of the Korean Ministry of Education, and supports undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students across all academic disciplines.

The goal isn’t purely academic. Korea invests in you because it wants long-term friends, collaborators and alumni ambassadors around the world.

That matters more than you think. It shapes how your application gets read — which we’ll come back to when we talk about your Statement of Purpose.

You may still see the name KGSP floating around older forums. It’s the same scholarship, simply rebranded — the benefits, eligibility and process are identical.

GKS Scholarship Benefits: What You Actually Receive

Let’s talk money, because this is where GKS separates itself from “partial tuition waiver” scholarships that leave you scrambling.

Tuition and Admission Fees

NIIED covers tuition up to KRW 5 million, and your host university absorbs anything above that amount plus the admission fee.

Translation: your tuition bill is zero. Not reduced. Zero.

Korean Language Training

Scholars assigned to language training receive KRW 5.2 million per year for the program fee.

You’ll spend that first year at a designated university language institute, full-time, with everything paid for.

The Living Allowance

Here’s where the 2027 guidelines changed something important. The allowance is now stated as an annual all-inclusive amount: KRW 13,560,000 per year during the Korean language program (roughly KRW 1,130,000 per month), and KRW 14,400,000 per year during the degree program (roughly KRW 1,200,000 per month).

That single subsidy now rolls together living costs, accommodation, health insurance, Korean proficiency grants, the TOPIK application fee, settlement allowance and degree completion grants.

Read that twice. Older blog posts still list these as separate cheques — they’re working from outdated guidelines. Always trust the current year’s official PDF over a blog written three cycles ago.

Over a five-year bachelor’s track — one language year plus four degree years — the allowance alone totals over KRW 71 million.

Airfare

You get an economy-class flight ticket based on actual expense, with some exclusions.

Pay attention to those exclusions. Scholars already residing in Korea when the final results are announced don’t receive entry airfare, and neither entry airfare nor visa support is provided if you fly in from a country other than your country of citizenship.

Program Duration

For the 2027 undergraduate cycle, funding covers 5 to 7 years for bachelor’s students and 3 to 4 years for associate degree students, including the language training year.

Graduate scholars receive a comparable package with a higher monthly stipend, plus research-related support depending on program type.

GKS Eligibility Criteria: Do You Qualify?

Before you spend three weeks on documents, spend three minutes here.

Citizenship

You must be a citizen of a country designated by NIIED, and neither you nor either of your parents may hold Korean citizenship — dual citizenship included.

One exception: the GKS-UIC program is open to applicants from every country except Korea. If your country isn’t on the undergraduate list, check the graduate list separately — the quotas differ.

Age

Undergraduate applicants must be under 25. Graduate applicants must be under 40. Academic professors from ODA recipient countries get an extended limit of 45.

Academic Record

Your overall academic performance must sit in the top 20 percent of your class — which NIIED defines as roughly 80 percent, or a CGPA of 2.64 on a 4.0 scale.

Meeting the minimum gets you through the door. It does not get you selected. Competitive applicants sit far above it.

Graduation Timing

For the 2027 undergraduate cycle, you must have already graduated or be expected to graduate by December 31, 2026 — and you’ll submit an expected graduation certificate at application time.

If you’re graduating in March 2027, you are not eligible this round. It’s a hard line, and every year it catches people off guard.

Disqualifiers Worth Knowing

Graduates of Korean high schools — including international schools inside Korea — are generally ineligible. Previous GKS degree scholars are generally ineligible. And anyone who withdrew or was disqualified as a GKS scholar within the past three years cannot apply.

Embassy Track vs University Track: Choosing Your Route

This single decision shapes your entire application. For the 2027 undergraduate cycle, 156 of the 286 places run through the Embassy Track across 74 invited countries.

The Embassy Track

You apply through the Korean Embassy in your country of citizenship. The embassy runs the first screening, then NIIED runs the second.

Under the General category, you may apply to up to three universities from the Type A and Type B lists — and you must include at least one Type B university among your choices.

Choose this if: your country has a decent quota, you want three shots at placement, and you’d benefit from an interview where you can actually make an impression.

The University Track

You apply directly to one Korean university, which nominates you to NIIED.

Choose this if: your country’s embassy quota is tiny, you have a specific department in mind, or you’re targeting a program only available through this route.

The Rule That Ends Applications

You cannot apply through both tracks simultaneously. Doing so isn’t a technicality — it’s disqualification.

A Strategy Note Most Guides Skip

If applications concentrate heavily at popular universities, you can pass the NIIED second round and still fail at every single one of your preferred universities in the third round.

So think tactically. Korean universities are specialised — KOREATECH and Ajou for engineering, Chonnam and Jeonbuk National for agriculture and life sciences, HUFS for languages and international studies, Hongik for design, POSTECH and UNIST for pure science.

A regional national university that’s genuinely strong in your field will read your application far more favourably than a famous general university where you’re applicant number 400.

One more warning: after final selection, transferring to a different field of study is not permitted. Choose like you mean it.

The GKS Application Timeline: Step by Step

Step 1 — Download the Official Guidelines

Not a summary. Not a YouTube recap. The actual PDF for your cycle and degree level, from the Study in Korea portal.

Requirements get updated between cycles, so confirm everything at the official GKS portal before submitting.

Step 2 — Confirm Your Program Category

Decide early whether you’re applying under General, Overseas Koreans & Adoptees, R-GKS, Research or another category. Everything downstream depends on it.

Step 3 — Start Document Authentication Immediately

This is the step that quietly kills applications.

Final graduation certificates must be apostilled or consular confirmed, and failure to submit them by the stated deadline results in cancellation of your acceptance.

Apostille processing in some countries takes six to eight weeks. Start now, not after you finish your essays.

Step 4 — Build Your Document Package

Typical required documents include:

  • GKS application form (completed online)
  • Personal Statement
  • Statement of Purpose / Study Plan
  • One or two letters of recommendation
  • Academic transcripts and graduation certificates
  • Proof of citizenship for you and your parents
  • Personal Medical Assessment
  • Language proficiency certificates (TOPIK, IELTS, TOEFL) if available
  • Awards, publications, portfolio — where applicable

If a university requires anything beyond NIIED’s list — a portfolio, for instance — you are responsible for confirming and submitting it directly to that university.

Step 5 — Submit Online

Complete the online application, enter your information exactly as it appears on your passport, select the correct program and departments, upload scanned copies, review everything, and submit before the deadline.

Submit two days early. Servers get hammered in the final hours, and NIIED grants no exceptions for technical problems.

Step 6 — If Shortlisted, Submit Originals

Applicants who pass the embassy’s first round must print the online forms, add original handwritten signatures, and submit one original set plus authenticated certificates by the embassy’s stated deadline.

Step 7 — Interview

Qualified candidates undergo interview rounds conducted by the Korean Embassy or host university before final results.

Step 8 — Watch the Notice Board Yourself

NIIED states explicitly that checking notices on the Study in Korea website is each applicant’s responsibility — it does not notify applicants individually of each round’s results.

Every year, applicants miss the university-confirmation deadline in late December because they were waiting for an email that was never coming.

Bookmark the notice board. Check it weekly.

How to Write a Winning GKS Statement of Purpose

Your grades get you shortlisted. Your essays get you selected.

I’ve read enough rejected drafts to tell you exactly where most applicants lose.

Know the Difference Between the Two Essays

Your Personal Statement is your story: background, family circumstances, what shaped you, why Korea.

Your Statement of Purpose / Study Plan is your plan: what you’ll study, how you’ll study it, and what you’ll do with it afterwards.

Applicants who blur these two end up writing the same essay twice. Reviewers notice.

Open With a Specific Moment, Not a Thesis

Skip “Education has always been my passion.” Everyone writes that sentence.

Start where your interest actually became real — a broken irrigation pump in your village, a hospital queue, a line of code that finally compiled at 3 a.m.

Name Names

Generic praise for Korea reads as filler. Specificity reads as preparation.

Name the department. Name a professor whose research overlaps with yours. Name the lab, the course, the method you want to learn.

Two sentences of genuine research beat two paragraphs of admiration for K-pop and kimchi.

Answer the Question Nobody Asks Out Loud

Remember why this scholarship exists: educational exchange and long-term ties between Korea and your country.

So show the reviewer the bridge. What will you build between Korea and home after you graduate? Be concrete. A research partnership, a teaching career, a company, a policy role.

Address the Language Year Honestly

Many departments require TOPIK Level 3 or 4 to enter the degree after the language year — and choosing a department whose level you can’t realistically reach is choosing to fail in year two.

If you’ve already started learning Korean, say so and prove it. If you haven’t, show your plan. Reviewers want evidence you understand what you’re signing up for.

Turn Weaknesses Into Trajectory

A dip in your second-year GPA isn’t fatal. Silence about it is worse than a single honest sentence explaining what happened and what changed after.

Write Tight, Then Cut

Short paragraphs. Active verbs. No thesaurus showing off.

Then have someone who doesn’t like you read it. Praise is comfortable; edits are useful.

Mistakes That Quietly Sink Good Applications

Recycling last year’s information. Guidelines change between cycles — do not simply copy information from previous GKS years.

Underestimating the cost of Seoul. NIIED explicitly warns that living costs in the capital region are higher and that scholars pay their own accommodation out of the monthly allowance. The same KRW 1,200,000 stretches much further in Jeonju than in Gangnam.

Not reading the withdrawal rules. Full repayment is required if you withdraw within the first three months after enrolling at your university.

Applying to one department in multiple ways. You may not apply to more than one department within the same university.

Assuming English works everywhere. English-taught departments exist and are listed in the University Information file — but they’re a minority. Check before you choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need TOPIK to apply?
No. GKS doesn’t require a language score from every applicant, although individual universities or departments can set additional requirements. A TOPIK score strengthens your file, and reaching Level 5 or 6 later earns an additional grant.

How competitive is it?
Very. Acceptance rates vary dramatically by country because each invited country has its own quota — a country with four seats is a different battle from one with twenty.

Can I work part-time as a GKS scholar?
Limited part-time work is possible with permission, but your visa conditions and academic performance requirements come first. Don’t build your budget around it.

What happens if I don’t reach TOPIK Level 3?
If you don’t reach the required level in time, the scholarship can be cancelled. Take the language year seriously.

When does the graduate cycle open?
Around February. The 2026 round ran February 12 to February 25, and the 2027 graduate guidelines are expected on a similar schedule.

Your Next Move

If you’re an undergraduate applicant, your window is measured in days, not months. Open the official 2027 GKS-U guidelines tonight, confirm your eligibility, and email your recommender tomorrow morning.

If you’re a graduate applicant, you have something better than urgency — you have runway. Use the next few months to sharpen your research focus, contact potential supervisors, and draft your Study Plan properly instead of frantically.

Either way, one thing stays true. The students who win GKS aren’t the ones with perfect transcripts. They’re the ones who read the actual guidelines, picked their department with real thought, and wrote essays that sounded like a specific human being with a specific plan.

Be that applicant.

Every figure in this guide comes from the published 2027 GKS undergraduate guidelines and recent NIIED cycle announcements. NIIED notes that the English guidelines are a translation and the Korean version prevails in any conflict — verify against the official documents at studyinkorea.go.kr before you submit.

Strategic Steps to Boost Your Application Profile

If you do not hold an IELTS certificate, you can strengthen your admission profile through the following actionable strategies:

  • Highlight Specialized Certifications: Feature recognized digital credentials—such as certifications from the World Bank Institute, Coursera, or specialized technical training in R, Data Science, and Research Methodology—prominently on your CV. These demonstrate strong analytical capability and professional commitment.
  • Craft an Exceptional Motivation Letter: Use your Statement of Purpose (SOP) to showcase your academic trajectory, practical achievements, and research interests clearly, compensating for the lack of standardized language tests.
  • Consider Low-Cost Alternatives: If a program requires basic proof of English, consider the Duolingo English Test (DET). It is accessible online, costs around $59, and is accepted by thousands of global institutions.

Focusing on programs with alternative assessment methods allows you to successfully step onto the global stage without standard language test hurdles.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: Can I apply for global scholarships without IELTS or an MOI certificate?

Yes, several fully funded international scholarships do not require formal IELTS scores or MOI certificates. Programs such as the Türkiye Burslari Scholarship, Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), and Stipendium Hungaricum assess applicants through academic transcripts, Statements of Purpose (SOP), direct university entrance tests, or online interviews.

Q2: How do universities evaluate English proficiency if standardized tests are waived?

Universities often evaluate language capability during structured online interviews (conducted via Skype or Microsoft Teams) or through internal English entrance assessments. Additionally, obtaining a provisional Acceptance Letter from a university professor can bypass formal language testing requirements for specific research-based programs.

Q3: How can I make my application competitive without an IELTS score?

You can strengthen your profile by highlighting verified digital certifications—such as credentials from the World Bank Institute, Coursera, or specialized technical coursework in R and Data Analytics—on your CV. Writing a strong Statement of Purpose (SOP) that clearly articulates your academic achievements and career trajectory also helps offset the absence of standardized language test scores.

Q4: What alternative language test is widely accepted if basic proof is required?

If a university requires basic proof of English proficiency, the Duolingo English Test (DET) serves as a practical alternative. It costs approximately $59, can be taken online from home, and is recognized by thousands of educational institutions worldwide.

Q5: Are these scholarships recognized globally even though they don’t require IELTS?

Yes, government-sponsored programs like Türkiye Burslari, CSC (China), MEXT (Japan), and Stipendium Hungaricum are prestigious global initiatives. They are fully recognized by international academic and professional institutions.

Q6: Does studying in a non-English speaking country affect career prospects?

Not at all. Most of these programs offer degrees taught entirely in English. Additionally, learning a foreign language (such as Turkish or Russian) through preparatory courses significantly enhances your global resume and cross-cultural skill set.

(i) শিল্পের আবর্জনা :

(What Is Web Browser)

(History Of Web Browser)

Microsoft

(List Of Web Browser)

How to Work Web Browsers?
